Eden businesses debate tax districts.
EDEN - Small businesses and property owners in Leaksville and Draper may establish special tax districts to fund projects that beautify the areas and draw more shoppers. During Tuesday night”s Eden City Council meeting, Economic Director Mike Dougherty told council members that merchants and property owners requested a Municipal Service District, which can carry a special tax that funds projects to enhance the district. Dougherty said the city was approached with a proposal favored by many businesses and property owners in Draper and Leaksville to begin collecting a tax that merchants in the districts can use to improve the area. The Twin Rivers Downtown Development Corporation voted in January to begin working toward a new district. The Olde Leaksville Merchants Association agreed to hold a public hearing during the May 20th Eden City Council meeting.
