It’s no secret that in advertising your business, you need to put your best foot forward. This means, simply, that you want to present your product or service in the best light. After all, you’re in this to make money and nobody is going to hang you from the highest yardarm for raving about what you have to offer. However, there is a fine line between raving and hype that can seriously damage your credibility if you cross that line. This article is going to discuss this problem and show you how to avoid turning your ad into a PR nightmare.
In advertising there are two things that you have to be very aware of when writing your ads. The one is believability and the other is credibility. And trust me, the one leads right into the other. You need to always keep these two things in mind if you’re going to have the strongest chance of hooking your prospect into your product or service. The best way to illustrate how to destroy these two things is with examples.
Let’s say you’re promoting a “make money at home” product and you come up with a headline that reads something like this…
“Make $30,000 in your first 7 days with NO work!”
Now, I realize that there are people out there who will believe just about anything, which is why shady marketers pray on them so much. But your person of average intelligence is going to look at something like this and laugh you off the planet. Nobody is ever going to believe something like this. A more believable headline would be something like…
“Earn A Solid Income Online In Just 7 Days!”
Now, you’re not making any wild income claims and you’re keeping the time frame the same, which is obviously the critical part of the ad. While this is still stretching things just a bit, at least people won’t be laughing at this statement. A solid income can mean many things. To some, in 7 days, maybe that’s just $500. So you’re at the very least going to get people to check out this ad.
What if you’re selling a natural cure for acne and you come up with a headline something like this…
“Cure your acne in 5 minutes, GUARANTEED”
Right, somebody is going to put something on their face and five minutes later their acne is gone for good. This is a perfect way to not make any sales. Nobody will believe this. However, if you come up with something like this…
“Natural Acne Cure…See Results In Just 3 Days”
Not only is this believable, but you’re going to get people to think that while 3 days is kind of fast, seeing results sounds a lot more probable than you’re acne being gone in five minutes.
If you stretch believability beyond a certain point, you destroy your credibility because people see you as a liar and a con man.
So when you’re doing your advertising, think about how YOU would feel if you saw an ad that read like this…
“Make $30,000 in your first 7 days with NO work!”
I think you get my message.
To YOUR Success,
